India's first vertical lift railway sea bridge opened in Tamil Nadu on Sunday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the new Pamban Bridge. This 2.07-kilometer bridge, which spans the Palk Strait, will allow for more seamless connectivity and will be unveiled on Ram Navami.
The original Pamban Bridge, which connected Rameswaram Island to mainland India in 1914 and was a cantilever structure with a Scherzer Rolling Lift span, has been replaced.
Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a public sector organization under the ministry of railways, constructed the sophisticated new Pamban Bridge.
Important aspects of the bridge:
- To accommodate larger ships, the 72.5-meter navigational span can be increased to 17 meters.
- The bridge improves sea connectivity by being three meters higher than the current one.
- Stainless steel reinforcing and premium protective paint are among the elements used in its construction that are intended to last.
- The superstructure of the bridge presently supports a single line, while the foundation is intended to hold two tracks.
