In Assam, Uber has introduced a private vehicle ridesharing service, ushering in a new era for India's developing ridesharing and taxi sectors.
At Advantage Assam, the state's investment summit, Uber announced the Saarthi service and inked a memorandum of understanding with the Assam government to integrate private vehicles on its platform.
This action comes after Assam, one of the first governments to enact such laws, decided in 2023 to permit private vehicles to operate as taxis.
Private vehicle owners are permitted to offer up to four rides inside the city borders each day and two intercity excursions each week under the updated Assam regulations. A minimum of Rs 5 lakh in insurance coverage is required of drivers.
Since other jurisdictions have been more hesitant to permit private vehicles to function as taxis, this strategy has drawn attention from all around the country.
