According to Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Steel Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, India has hit a significant milestone in its transition to electric transportation by installing 25,202 public charging stations around the country.
The minister provided this information in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, emphasizing the government's efforts to promote electric vehicle (EV) adoption and establish charging infrastructure nationally.
Karnataka has the most public charging stations, with 5,765. Maharashtra follows with 3,728 stations, while Uttar Pradesh comes in third with 1,989. In contrast, Delhi and Tamil Nadu each have 1,941 and 1,413 public charging outlets, respectively.
The Ministry of Power has developed "Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure-2024" to guarantee that stations across India adhere to consistent standards and regulations. These standards seek to establish a linked and interoperable charging network.
However, the minister highlighted that estimating the precise number of charging outlets required for a specific number of EVs is difficult due to variables such as vehicle kinds, travel patterns, and emerging technologies.
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' Vahan portal, as of December 4, India had registered 28,55,015 electric two-wheelers and 2,57,169 electric four-wheelers.
