Dev Diwali or Diwali of the Gods celebrated in Varanasi, Uttar Pradeshon on November 27

Dev Diwali, also known as the Diwali of the Gods, is particularly observed in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, and certain regions of Gujarat. The event, also known as Dev Deepavali, commemorates Lord Shiva's victory over the terrible demon Tripurasura. Tripura Utsav, another name for Dev Diwali, is derived from the belief that Lord Shiva vanquished the demon on this particular day. One of the biggest celebrations in Varanasi is Dev Diwali.

On the Purnima Tithi of the month of Kartik, people celebrate Dev Diwali. Drik Panchang states that Dev Diwali falls on November 26 this year. On November 26, Purnima Tithi will start at 15:53 PM and terminate at 14:45 PM on November 27.

Hindu mythology states that on the auspicious day of Dev Diwali, the gods and goddesses descend to Earth to bathe in the Ganges River's sacred waters. To honour all the gods and goddesses, diyas are lighted on Varanasi's ghats. This day is also used to commemorate Lord Shiva's victory over the demon Tripurasura.

On this day, people adorn their houses with oil lights and rangoli, while Varanasi ghats are decked out with diyas. One of the highlights of the celebration is the Ganga Aarti on Dev Diwali. On this day, 24 young girls and 24 priests conduct the Ganga Aarti with the utmost dedication. During this time, pilgrims travel to Varanasi to offer their respects. Processions are held, and firecrackers are let off to beautify the sky. All night long, people dance and listen to spiritual music.
