News EventUnder the auspices of the Ernakulam district panchayat in Kakkanad, an exhibition of millets and millet products got off on Wednesday as part of the district's attempts to cultivate more minor cereals. The district panchayat community hall is the venue for the event.
According to sources inside the Department of Agriculture, in honour of the International Year of Millets, the department and the district panchayat have set distinct goals for increasing the area under millet cultivation. The goal is to gradually convert around 120 hectares to millet farming. This year alone, it's anticipated that millets would be planted on at least 70 hectares. With the harvest of tiny millet fields this year, Kottuvally panchayat is in the lead.
People have responded positively to the exhibition, showing up in significant numbers. Farmers growing millet hope to follow in the footsteps of the Attappady tribe in Palakkad, who have found success with their crop.
On Thursday, Hibi Eden, MP, will formally open the festival. Uma Thomas, MLA, is scheduled to attend.
