Vizhinjam international seaport received its location code signifying the port’s readiness to serve as a major transshipment hub

The Vizhinjam international seaport was given its location code prior to the planned start of commercial operations. This was a significant step in indicating the port's preparedness to function as a significant transshipment centre. The new code opens the door for more commerce and commercial activity in the area while also improving the port's logistical capabilities.

On June 21, 2024, the port developer Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) disclosed on Facebook the location code—IN NYY 1—that it had obtained from the Indian government. While "NYY" refers for Neyyattinkara, "IN" stands for India.

Work on the 600-meter stretch of the 1,700-meter four-lane road that connects the port to the National Highway has been finished, and work on the remaining portion is continuing.

It is anticipated that the ₹7,700 crore deep-water international port, built in Kerala under a public-private partnership model, will revolutionise commerce and economic activity in the region. The port that the Adani Group is developing will rank among the biggest ports in the world when it is put into service. The project, which was supposed to be put into service in 2019, was delayed for a number of reasons, and the port developer now has a new target of December 2024.
