NewsThe first two months of the current fiscal year saw record numbers of passengers passing through Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. With 4.44 lakh passengers handled in May—2.15 lakh international and 2.28 lakh domestic—the airport once again set a record for most passenger flow. The airport has exceeded 4 lakh passenger handling in April as well, fulfilling its goal of reaching 50 lakh passengers for the current fiscal year.
In addition, the airport handled 44 lakh people in the recently ended fiscal, a 27% increase over the 34.6 lakh passengers handled in the preceding fiscal year 2022–2023 and the greatest passenger volume handled by the airport in a financial year. 24.2 lakh domestic and 19.8 lakh foreign travellers made up the total of 44 lakh passengers.
The airport is expected to manage the 50 lakh passengers this fiscal year, according to airport sources, as new services and frequency upgrades in many sectors are on the horizon. Permission has been granted for the airport to undertake development projects worth ₹1,200 crore over the next five years. Recarpeting the runways, building a new Air Traffic Control (ATC) facility, and expanding the international terminal—for which a master plan is now being prepared—were the main elements of the development project.
In order to make room for the building of a state-of-the-art ATC at the airport, the current ATC will temporarily relocate to the international terminal. Additionally, according to airport sources, the amenities at the domestic terminal (T1) would be enhanced by updating the entry gate's civil facilities, expanding parking, and overhauling the canopy. In keeping with the growth in connectivity at the airport—which currently links 12 foreign destinations and 11 local locations nationwide—the airport also sees between 90 and 100 aircraft movements every day.
