NewsIn a year, the Horticulture Department's proposal to create a herbarium—which will also be available digitally—would make the taxonomy of every species of plants and trees at Lalbagh Botanical Garden accessible with a single click. For the past six months or so, a group of three taxonomists under the direction of K.R. Keshava Murthy have been working on the herbarium.
In Lalbagh, there are 2,950 different kinds of plants and trees. Herbarium is a collection of dried specimens that are used to document all leaves, fruits, flowers, and bark according to science. These samples will be arranged scientifically on herbarium sheets. According to Jagadeesh M., Joint Director (Parks and Gardens), Horticulture Department, "We will also provide all the taxonomical information about that species." The shelves for the herbarium were purchased from Lucknow.
The Horticulture Department intends to publish a document titled "Plant Wealth of Lalbagh" in addition to the herbarium. Numerous works such as "Trees of Lalbagh," "Climbers of Lalbagh," "Creepers of Lalbagh," and so forth will fall under this broad document. On one side of the book will be photographs of the plant, while on the other will be information about its origin, medicinal properties, age, and other taxonomic facts, as per Jagadeesh M., Joint Director (Parks and Gardens), Horticulture Department.
