NewsA unit of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully constructed the country's lightest bulletproof jacket, meant to resist the highest threat level, designated as Level 6, authorities said on Tuesday. According to a DRDO official statement, the jacket protects against 7.62 x 54 R API ammunition, and it was developed using revolutionary materials and procedures.
"DRDO's Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment (DMSRDE) in Kanpur has created the country's lightest bulletproof jacket for protection against 7.62 x 54 R API (level 6 of BIS 17051) ammunition. According to the statement, this bulletproof jacket was recently tested satisfactorily at TBRL in Chandigarh in accordance with BIS 17051-2018.
The jacket's front Hard Armour Panel (HAP) is a distinguishing feature, able to sustain numerous impacts (up to six shots) from 7.62 x 54 R API (Sniper rounds) in both ICW (in conjunction with) and solo designs. This jacket is distinguished for its ergonomically designed front HAP, which is made of a monolithic ceramic plate with polymer backing. This design provides optimal protection while simultaneously improving wearability and comfort throughout operations.
