NewsKochi Water Metro ships reached a milestone on April 28 (Sunday), ferrying a total of 20 lakh people since the project was launched on April 25 last year. The previous milestone was met on October 16, 2023, when a total of 10 lakh commuters had used the boats in the six months since their commissioning. According to the announcement, 14 electric-hybrid ferries are currently operating on five routes.
The High Court-Vypeen, Vyttila-Kakkanad, South Chittoor-Eloor-Cheranalloor, High Court-Bolgatty, and High Court-Fort Kochi corridors were the next to receive services. All of the ferry terminals—aside from the one in Mattancherry where four ships can be berthed simultaneously—are under construction: Kumbalam, Paliyamthuruth, Willingdon Island, and Kadamakkudy. The ferries are anticipated to stop at these locations by October after Cochin Shipyard Limited delivers an additional five by September. In the interim, e-buses are being introduced by Kochi Water Metro Limited (KWML) in an effort to improve last-mile connectivity from these terminals.
Passengers can ride in air-conditioned comfort on these silent ferries for half the cost of a bus ticket, and has to choose to purchase weekly, monthly, or quarterly travel passes.
