Kempegowda International Airport bagged silver award in the category of airports handling between 15 million and 35 million passengers a year

In the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific & Middle East Green Airports Recognition (GAR) 2024 competition, Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has won the silver award. In the area of airports serving 15 million to 35 million people annually, the KIA won the silver prize.

Twelve airports in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East were honored for their exceptional achievements in sustainability projects by ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, which recently revealed the findings of GAR 2024. The Green Airports Recognition 2024 topic is "Nature-based solutions and biodiversity."

Airports were invited to submit their best practices for conserving biodiversity and utilizing nature-based solutions on their property, as stated by ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East. These practices included plantations for social benefits and carbon reduction, airports protecting marine life, wetland/ecological rejuvenation, in-house airport horticulture and nurseries, and wildlife management for safe operations using nature-based solutions.

Based on different airport size categories and predetermined criteria, the recognized airports have been honored in three categories: platinum, gold, and silver.

Airports are classified into four groups based on the number of passengers they handle annually: above 35 million, between 15 and 35 million, between 8 and 15 million, and less than 8 million.

The platinum and gold prizes went to King Khalid International Airport in Saudi Arabia and Kansai Airport in Japan, two airports that handle between 15 million and 35 million passengers annually.

The other Indian airports to win the GAR 2024 are Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (silver) in Lucknow and Indira Gandhi International Airport (silver) in New Delhi, both of which handle over 35 million passengers annually in the category of airports handling over 8 million passengers annually.
