NewsBeginning next month, commuters using Chennai Metro Rail who own National Common Mobility Cards (NCMCs) will be able to use them to pay for bus travels, perhaps serving as a precursor to the eventual implementation of a common ticketing system.
Chennai Metro Rail introduced the card in April of last year in an effort to make it easier for people who use public transportation to travel with only one card. Only passengers on the Chennai Metro Rail have purchased the card thus far, and 16% of users use it daily for transit.
Users of Chennai Metro Rail and others with NCMC would be able to pay and board Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses before the end of the next month.
The move is especially important, according to CMRL officials, because bus stops are close to numerous stations, including Alandur, Chennai Central, Kilpauk, Chennai airport, Nandanam, Saidapet, Little Mount, Guindy, Koyambedu, and Thirumangalam. It will be beneficial for the hundreds of commuters who ride the bus to get to their closest destination after leaving the station. In a manner, this might eventually inspire more people to use public transportation, according to an official.
