BIS introduced two new guidelines aimed at improving the safety and quality of EVs in India

NewsTwo new rules have been developed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) with the objective of enhancing the safety and quality of electric vehicles (EVs) in India. The purpose of these recommendations, IS 18606: 2024 and IS 18590: 2024, is to address safety issues with electric cars in different categories. Two-wheelers go under the L category; four-wheelers and freight trucks fall under the M and N categories, respectively.
The new regulations concentrate on important parts of electric cars, namely the motor and transmission, which make up the powertrain.
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution states that these standards guarantee the powertrain's compliance with strict safety regulations.
They also stress the performance and safety of batteries, ensuring that they are safe and strong. Notably, these actions are necessary to accelerate India's shift to a more efficient, ecologically friendly, and sustainable transportation sector.
The implementation of these standards is a major step in improving the safety and dependability of electric batteries and powertrains. The rules seek to reduce the dangers connected with electric vehicles by making sure these vital components fulfill strict safety standards.
The project of the BIS also encompasses the increasing trend of e-rickshaws and e-karts. BIS has developed IS 18294: 2023, which establishes safety requirements for these vehicles, addressing everything from functioning to structure to guarantee the safety of both drivers and passengers, in order to meet their unique safety needs.
With the addition of these new standards, BIS now has thirty Indian standards covering electric cars, their accessories, and charging infrastructure. For India to make the shift to a more sustainable transportation system, this extensive set of requirements is essential. The guidelines encourage a wider adoption of electric mobility in the nation by promoting the production of high-quality EVs and improving safety.
The Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, oversees the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which is the National Standards Body of India. Indian standards are created, acknowledged, and promoted in large part by BIS.
The company works with industries to improve the caliber of their goods and services while making sure they adhere to the most recent performance and safety standards. These new EV guidelines are a part of BIS's continuous initiatives to promote and control India's electric vehicle market.
