Thirty pelican signals were operationalised in Hyderabad Wednesday to ensure pedestrian safety. Police commissioner C V Anand inaugurated one at Tank Bund road along the iconic Hussainsagar lake. These signals, which were paid for by the Safe City Project, according to the police, represent a big step towards making things better for pedestrians.
All of these signals will be manually operated by volunteers and will provide a window of 15-20 seconds for one to cross the road safely by turning the vehicular signal red in both directions, according to Anand, even though this system enables pedestrians to cross the roads at locations other than intersections and is intended to improve safety for both pedestrians and drivers.
The new system is anticipated to improve accessibility for those with disabilities or mobility issues, make crosswalks more visible to vehicles, and control and guarantee the safe flow of traffic. Anand said that in order to locate these sites and set up these signals, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and the municipal police collaborated. By equipping 100 traffic frontline police with body-worn cameras, they would be able to capture contacts with the public during enforcement, accidents, and other occurrences.
The Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda commissionerates were the jurisdiction of 94 pelican signs that the GHMC approved earlier in the year. GHMC is anticipated to hasten the installation of the remaining ones in the two other police commissionerates after 30 of them were operationalized in Hyderabad.
