This years Trevor Kletz Merit Award awarded to S.A. Abbasi of Pondicherry University

The esteemed Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Centre at Texas A&M University in the United States has organised this year's Trevor Kletz Merit Award, which was presented to S.A. Abbasi of Pondicherry University. Prof. Abbasi has been selected in honour of his 'lifelong contributions to the field of process safety, specifically aspects of accident forecasting, loss prevention, inherently safer design, domino effect modelling, greenbelt design, and environmental impacts associated with process industry accidents', according to a press release from Pondicherry University, citing a communication from the award selection committee.

"Now joining the galaxy of the world's top process safety experts who have been honoured since the inception of this award in 1998," the citation said.

According to the press release, Prof. Abbasi is regarded as one of India's leading pioneers in process safety research and is among the top five globally for citations in this area. All international rating organisations have put him in the top 0.5% of researchers worldwide, regardless of his field of specialisation. His efforts to create low-cost, environmentally friendly technology for waste management and pollution control have earned him several prestigious accolades and awards as well as nine patents.

The recipient was congratulated on their accomplishment by Pondicherry University Vice-Chancellor Gurmeet Singh.
