NewsOn Sunday morning, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi installed a gold sceptre, or sengol, in the new Lok Sabha chamber amidst Vedic chanting by priests from Tamil Nadu, as part of the daylong inaugural celebrations of the new Parliament building.
The Prime Minister also recognised 11 workers who had helped with the building's construction, including Ram Murmu, a cleaner from Jharkhand, Anil Kumar Yadav, a Bihar native who worked on the building's sandstone walls, Muzaffar Khan, a mechanic from Jharkhand who fixed equipment there, and Anand Vishwakarma, a Varanasi resident who painted the ceilings of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha chambers.
The PM bowed down to the Sengol, which has been at a museum in Prayagraj since it was handed to Jawaharlal Nehru by the Thiruvaduthurai Adheenam (Mutt) in Tamil Nadu on the eve of Independence. The Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla stood next to the PM as he received the sceptre from the priests and put it in a glass cabinet behind the speaker's seat. A plaque stating that the new structure is "dedicated to the nation" was also unveiled by Modi.
Amit Shah, Hardeep Puri, Rajnath Singh, S. Jaishankar, Anurag Thakur, and Ashwini Vaishnaw, as well as Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Pramod Sawant, the chief minister of Goa, and Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister of Gujarat, were all in attendance for the multifaith prayer.
The construction of the new Parliament began in January 2021 and is expected to cost $1,200 crore. The triangular structure, created by HCP Design, Planning and Management Ltd, is situated next to the historic Parliament building, which was finished in 1927.
