NewsEvery Friday will henceforth be commemorated as 'Women's Dignity Day' to promote awareness about issues affecting women, according to Vasireddy Padma, head of the Andhra Pradesh State Women's Commission. Ms. Padma pointed out how these platforms had become a tool in the hands of society to target women during a lecture on 'Abuse of women on social media platforms' in a crowded audience on Wednesday. She went on to say that even powerful women were not safe.
"The commission will ensure that stern action is taken against the abuser," she stated, asking women to report similar incidents without fear. The commission convened the seminar, which attracted over a hundred women, to solicit views and recommendations from the public and women from many walks of life in dealing with the growing issue of online harassment.
According to K. Supraja, Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration), Guntur, the incidence of cyber crimes in Guntur has increased in the previous two years as more people recognise the gravity of such situations and the need of reporting them. "There is a need to make punishments more stringent in cyber crimes," she added, adding that there was still a long way to go in promoting awareness among women. She stated that women may report similar incidents to any police station, regardless of jurisdiction.
B. Keerthi, president of Vasavya Mahila Mandali, stated that any politician who disparages women should not be allowed to run for office."Police personnel should be trained to handle such cases, and every station should have a cyber wing," she stated.
Meanwhile, the debate was briefly halted when leaders from the Telugu Desam Party and the Jana Sena Party caused a commotion after being denied access to the site. Vangalapudi Anitha, State President of the Telugu Desam Party's Women's Wing, wrote to Ms. Padma about the problems her party's women were facing and the teasing they were exposed to on a daily basis. Ms. Anitha later told reporters, "Women leaders of the TDP, JSP, BJP, and Congress bear the brunt of online abuse, but none of us are present at the seminar." Ms. Padma only raises her voice when a YSRCP member is assaulted. The cops escorted us into the hall, as if we were terrorists."
