Santiniketan, set up by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore on September 17, made it to UNESCO’s World Heritage List

The town of Santiniketan, established on September 17 by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore and situated in West Bengal's Birbhum region, has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Santiniketan, which translates to "abode of peace," began to take shape in 1901, and it was here that Tagore laid the groundwork for Visva Bharati University.

“New inscription on the @UNESCO #WorldHeritage List: Santiniketan, #India. Congratulations!" the world body said. Santiniketan will be India’s 41st World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO. While expressing her joy over the achievements, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee noted that Santiniketan was "nurtured by the poet and has been supported by Bengalis over generations."

According to the dossier submitted by the Ministry of Culture to UNESCO, Santiniketan "displays an important interchange in human values, over a period of time or within a cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town planning or landscape design." Since 2010, there have been attempts to get Santiniketan included in the World Heritage List.
