Puducherry authorities installed fish-shaped trash bin on the beachfront to alert on microplastics and keep beaches clean

As part of an effort to maintain clean beaches and increase public awareness of the harm that microplastics do to marine life, Puducherry authorities have placed a fish-shaped trash bin on this section of the beach. The fish-shaped trash bin on the Beach Promenade is sponsored by Godrej, a multinational conglomerate, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. Keep Namma Pondy Clean, a ReCity Network project in collaboration with the Local Administration Department, Puducherry Municipality, and Swachatha Corporation, placed it close to the Le Cafe restaurant.

Visitors are encouraged to dispose of plastics and other non-biodegradable material in the installation, which doubles as a huge trash can. The trash made of plastic that was gathered for the fish sculpture will be transported to Dubrayapet's Sanitation Park, where it will be recycled and separated. According to Mr. Guhan, every day, the Sanitation Park handles around 4 tonnes of low-value plastic garbage.
