The New Parliament building will be officially opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 28, according to a statement released on Thursday by the Lok Sabha Secretariat. It stated that Modi met with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday to extend an invitation for him to dedicate the New Parliament Building. The present Parliament's construction was finished in 1927, and it was noted that there was a "lack of space" given the demands of the time.
"In both Houses, there were also insufficient provisions for MPs to meet comfortably, which was reducing the effectiveness of the members' job. The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha also voted resolutions requesting the government to build a new edifice for the Parliament in light of the aforementioned, according to the statement.
The new structure, which is located next to the current Parliament House, would have a capacity for 888 Lok Sabha members and 300 Rajya Sabha members, respectively, as opposed to the current capabilities of 543 and 250, according to a statement from the Lok Sabha.
Construction was expected to start in January 2021 and be completed by November 2022 after the PM set the building's foundation stone on December 10, 2020. Tata Projects Ltd. built the structure, which was planned by Ahmedabad-based HCP Design, Planning and Management, the Central Public Works Department's consultant for the wider Central Vista redevelopment project.
