Kolkata-based initiative - Know Your Neighbour aims at promoting communal harmony in West Bengal
16 Dec 2023
NewsThis winter, a number of activities will be held by Know Your Neighbour, or KYN, a project founded in Kolkata that seeks to foster communal peace in West Bengal. The purpose of KYN is to celebrate India's diversity and advance historical knowledge.
Mostly in association with institutions, these activities will take place all across Kolkata to inspire youth and inform them about India's variety. The "Diversity Utsav — Song, Dance & Discussion," which is scheduled for this Sunday in collaboration with four institutions, will be the first in a series of events.
It is now more crucial than ever to make sure that everyone's human rights are upheld, as division grows in India. The goal of this initiative is to disseminate the idea that violating someone's human rights was, is, and will never be acceptable, according to KYN convenor Sabir Ahamed.
A "Port Walk" on December 17 and a "Beyond Park Street Walk" (in collaboration with Maulana Azad College's English Department) on December 19 will take place after this. One of the oldest ports in South Asia is Kolkata Port, from which indentured servants were sent to work in other British colonies such as Guyana, Trinidad, Fiji, Mauritius, and Surinam. The majority of these labourers were from modern-day Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
There will be a Science Heritage Walk in the Taltala and Entally areas during the first week of January. Open to everybody, the scientific walk will showcase the contributions made by Bengali scientists and their laboratories, some of which have been destroyed. Seeing locations connected to Jagadish Chandra Bose—where he lived, worked, and was cremated—would be the major draw. There will be a study excursion to Murshidabad in the end of January.
