NewsThe Kochi Water Metro, on October 16, achieved the historic milestone of conveying 10 lakh people in less than half a year after its debut. The achievement was noted on the ticket given to Sanha Fathima, a Manjeri, Malappuram, Class VI student. She had travelled from the High Court Junction terminal to the Vypeen water metro station with her family, carrying the ticket.
To commemorate the event, Kochi Water Metro Chief Operating Officer Sajan P. John and Finance Director S. Annapoorani of Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) gave gifts to Sanha. On October 26, 2023, the Kochi Water Metro will have been operational for six months. One measure of the service's enormous public appeal is the milestone of 10 lakh passengers in a relatively short period of time. Twelve boats are now run by Kochi Water Metro between the Vytilla-Kakkanad terminal and the High Court Junction-Vypeen-Bolghatty terminal.
The next service to be introduced is from the High Court Junction terminus to South Chittoor. The last details of the arrangements are being finalised. Building is also moving quickly on the terminals at Fort Kochi, Mulavukad North, Willingdon Island, Kumbalam, Kadamakkudy, and Paliamthuruth. By December 2023, the Fort Kochi terminal—which is regarded as one of the key terminals—should be finished with development. Additionally, there are ongoing tender procedures for the Mattancherry terminal's development.
The electric-hybrid boats that Kochi Water Metro uses have gained recognition as a cutting-edge mode of public transit outside of the nation. The Kochi Water Metro boats have taken home the coveted Gussies Electric Boat Awards, an international honour. It had also sparkled at a number of other awards. The Kochi Water Metro's boats and terminals are made to be accessible to those with disabilities. Wheelchair users can board the boat on their own without help. No pollution is being produced when services are being provided. Water Metro guarantees a comfortable, safe, and easy ride in air-conditioned boats. A ticket costs at least ₹20. For frequent commuters, there are tickets available for both weeks and months. Water metro services may also be accessed using a Kochi One Card.
