Kerala Khadi and Village Industries Board tying up with IFTK, has introduced a line of clothing aimed at attracting the new generation

Khadi has a rich history, is associated with the country's liberation movement, and is a unique hand-spun and hand-woven fabric, but it has not always been a popular option among the younger generation. As part of a collaboration with the Institute of Fashion Technology-Kerala (IFTK), the Kerala Khadi and Village Industries Board has introduced a range of clothes targeted at wooing the younger generation. In recent months, a variety of designer garments have become accessible at Khadi stores around the state. The decision comes on the heels of medical students, physicians, and nurses at several medical institutions and district hospitals throughout Kerala choosing Khadi overcoats made by the board's units.

The board has also had conversations with several social and religious organisations to further promote the usage of khadi clothing. Government service groups with political party affiliations have also shown a readiness to promote khadi among their members. A team from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras has created a master plan for the board's 10-year modernization ambitions.

The growth of fake khadi goods from other states has been one of the Khadi Board's difficulties. The Board recently unveiled a new logo and encouraged the public to buy khadi items from one of the State's 150 showrooms, where products properly created under the khadi boards of other states are also accessible. Following a pilot launch at a Kannur school, Khadi-based uniforms are being tested once a week in certain independent education institutes. Cooperatives have also expressed interest in becoming Khadi franchisees, with the first showroom set to open this week, according to Khadi Board secretary K.A. Ratheesh.
