Karnataka Transport Department issued a notification setting November 17 deadline for installation of HSRP
16 Nov 2023
NewsThe deadline for all automobiles to have High Security Registration Plates (HSRPs) installed is being extended by three more months, until February 17, 2024. The previous date was November 17. The government would shortly issue an order extending the deadline, according to Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy. "We have chosen to extend the deadline to February 17, 2024, in light of the minimal number of HSRP installations to date and the ongoing legal dispute surrounding the matter. In the upcoming days, a formal order and notification will be issued, according to Mr. Reddy.
A notification was released by the Transport Department in August of this year, requiring the installation of HSRP on about two crore cars registered before April 1, 2019, with a deadline of November 17.
Nonetheless, a segment of the sector objected to the notification and filed a challenge in the Karnataka High Court. The necessary requirement for HSRP number plates was fiercely opposed by the Akhila Karnataka Vehicle Number Plates Manufacturers and Sellers’ Association.
A Division Bench of the High Court on October 25 issued an interim decision, overturning a single judge's September 20 judgement that had instructed the State government to develop a plan within 15 days for car makers to approve HSRP manufacturers universally.
The Division Bench's recent interim ruling gave the State administration and other interested parties a chance to discuss the matter and complete the plan.
"All parties involved have convened a meeting in accordance with the directives of the High Court. The Union government's HSRP guidelines are the only ones that the State administration has been putting into practise. We'll keep doing it that way, Mr. Reddy declared.
A lack of knowledge about the directive has led to a large number of unlicensed HSRP makers in Karnataka repairing unlawful HSRP, according to the Association of Registration Plates makers of India.
