NewsIn Karnataka, the State Traffic Police Department introduced the e-challan traffic fine system on Wednesday, February 7, making physical challans for traffic fines obsolete. It is said that by doing this, it became the first State in the nation to completely eliminate paper use.
As part of this project, which is a partnership between the State Police, the State Bank of India, and the State Treasury Department, 1,766 gadgets have been purchased and given to police officers at 64 traffic stations and 722 law and order stations around the State. To create an electronic challenge, the infractions are tracked in real time. Additionally, violators will have the choice of paying the fee with cash, a debit card, or using UPI.
Following its success, the system—which was first introduced in Bengaluru two years ago—was expanded statewide to include additional features including connection with the State Treasury Department and a proposal to connect it to the virtual court to enable direct payment of penalties. According to Mr. Kumar, this will result in a paperless station across the State. Via the provided link, offenders convicted of driving under the influence or under unusual circumstances have seven days to pay their fines through these online courts.
According to authorities, the next stage would include integrating the e-challan devices with the upgraded CCTV cameras positioned along the roadways.
