Jal Jeevan Mission has achieved 60% of its national goal

According to an official statement, the Jal Jeevan Mission, one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's signature initiatives to provide every rural household in the nation with a tap-water connection, has achieved 60% of its national goal after adding 23.4 million households in the fiscal year that ended in 2022–23.

According to the statement, 116 million of India's 190.4 million rural homes now have a working water tap. "This is a remarkable accomplishment that will improve many lives. In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, "We are doing everything possible to expand this coverage at an even greater pace in the times to come.

Less than 17% of households, or 32.3 million, had a tap connection at the time of the mission's launch, according to a baseline poll.

In a statement, it was noted that on April 4, 2023, "the country crossed another milestone in the journey towards 'Har Ghar Jal' with over 11.66 crore (60%) rural households provided with tap water supply in their homes."

Gujarat, Telangana, Goa, Haryana, Punjab, and the Union territories of Puducherry, Daman Diu & Dadra Nagar Haveli, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands currently have 100% service.

According to information from the Jal Shakti ministry, 2,078 water testing labs have been established as part of the mission, 1,122 of which have received accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories.

One of the biggest infrastructure-building initiatives in the nation, the Jal Jeevan Mission, involves the installation of source-to-household water tap connections.

According to the Jal Shakti ministry, the initiative has produced both direct and indirect jobs in rural areas. According to a preliminary survey conducted by IIM Bengaluru, 1,47,55,980 person-years of employment could be generated over the course of the JJM's five-year implementation period, which translates to an average of 29,51,196 people employed annually for the duration of the mission's construction phase.

According to Water Aid, nearly 820 million people in 12 of the country's main river basins experience "high to extreme" water stress. In rural India, finding a water supply is a difficult task. To stop this slog, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the piped water mission in 2019.
