During the Astrashakti 2023 exercise at the Suryalanka Air Force Station in Andhra Pradesh, the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted fire testing of its in-house built and produced SAMAR air defence missile system.
A division of the IAF's Maintenance Command has developed the air defence system known as SAMAR (Surface to Air Missile for Assured Retaliation). For the first time, the exercise included the SAMAR system, and it accomplished the shooting trial goals in several combat scenarios.
IAF authorities claim that the system can neutralise aircraft threats using missiles with a 2 to 2.5 Mach speed range. "The SAMAR system consists of a twin turret launch platform with the capability of launching two missiles in single and salvo mode depending upon the threat scenario," a statement from the IAF said.
