Gitanjali Aiyar, one of India's first English female news presenters on Doordarshan, passed away on Wednesday

Gitanjali Aiyar, a graduate of Kolkata's Loreto College, joined Doordarshan in 1971 and won four best anchor awards. In 1989, she further received the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award for Outstanding Women.

Gitanjali Aiyar, one of the country's first English-speaking female newsreaders for Doordarshan, passed away on Wednesday.

She was around 70 years old.

According to sources close to the family, the honourable anchor, who had Parkinson's illness, passed out after coming home from a stroll.

She was taking medicine for her Parkinson's illness. After coming home from a walk, she fainted, according to a close friend of Gitanjali Aiyar.

Gitanjali Aiyar, a Loreto College alumna who joined Doordarshan in 1971, won four best anchor awards. In 1989, she also received the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award for Outstanding Women.

Gitanjali Aiyar, who holds a diploma from the National School of Drama (NSD), not only presents news broadcasts but has also appeared in several print commercials and appeared in the television drama "Khandaan" directed by Sridhar Kshirsagar.

She worked with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) throughout her long, famous career.

A number of well-known people expressed their condolences for the prominent personality's passing on Twitter. Gitanjali Aiyar is survived by a son and daughter Pallavi Aiyar, who is also an award-winning journalist.
