Four women undergoing training at the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation's Staff Training Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, breaking barriers and stereotypes

Four women from different backgrounds are presently getting extensive training at the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation's Staff Training Centre in Thiruvananthapuram in preparation for deployment to drive the KSRTC's new fleet of 163 electric buses. KSRTC's lone female driver, VP Sheela, is also helping to train them. The four female learners are all licensed to operate big trucks. Anila, Jisna, and Sheena come from car-owning families; they are car enthusiasts who learnt to drive in order to be self-sufficient and make a living.

The trainees are perfecting their abilities on the fundamental mechanics of the vehicle, what to check before beginning their duty for the day, road rules and regulations, safety and ensuring they are ready for any challenge that comes their way under the supervision of seasoned driver and trainer Sanal Kumar. These women are also being taught in health management and soft skills to deal with chauvinistic drivers, road rage, and impolite passengers. They are also receiving martial arts instruction from the police in order to improve their personal safety. Restrooms and dormitories are being installed at bus terminals to improve conditions for female drivers.

KSRTC officials said they aim to dispel the myth that driving buses is not suitable for women. They also mention that students can work as part-time drivers. Thiruvananthapuram will soon be one of Kerala's first cities with 25% female drivers. These exceptional ladies are motivating everyone around them as their training advances. Anila, Jisna, Sheena, and Sreekutty are getting ready to leave their mark on the roadways of Thiruvananthapuram as August approaches.
