To meet the expanding transportation demands of the populace, the largest city in Andhra Pradesh, Visakhapatnam, which is positioned as the executive capital of the state, deserves a metro rail system. Urban Mass Transit Company (UMTC), the project's chosen consultant, has created the designs and Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Vizag Metro, a joint venture of the Governments of India, A.P., and IL&FS Engineering and Construction Limited.
The Vizag Metro project will be undertaken in the PPP manner, with the private investor investing the remaining cost. The Government of India would cover 20% of the project cost as Viability Gap Funding (VGF) and the State government 20%.
The final DPR for the building of the Vizag Metro Rail has been given to the State government, according to U.J.M. Rao, managing director of the AP Metro Rail Corporation (APMRC), who is hopeful that work will soon commence. We will submit the proposal for clearance to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) as soon as the State Cabinet approves it.
The 64.09 km Kurmannapalem Junction to Bhogapuram through Gajuwaka and Anandapuram metro corridor is one of the suggested routes. After the Bhogapuram International Airport is built, the metro corridor will be extended to the airport to enable seamless connection for travellers flying out of the city. Initially, the corridor would be up to Kommadi Junction (34 km).
The second 6.5 km corridor would go through the Railway New Colony, Railway Station, Old Jail Road, Vivekananda statue junction, RTC Complex, Sampath Vinayaka temple road, and AU Out Gate to connect Thatichetlapalem Junction (the current National Highway) to Park Hotel Junction.
The third 5.5 km corridor would go via Diamond Park, LIC, Dabagardens, City Police Commissioner's Office, and Poorna Market backside road from Gurudwara intersection (Santhipuram) to Old Head Post Office (OHPO) junction.
The metro rail offers the public an affordable, quick, pleasant, and environmentally responsible form of transportation. In each corridor, there will be a maximum interval of 8 minutes between two trains. There will initially be two coaches, but that number may rise based on demand, as per U.J.M. Rao.
