According to authorities informed of the development, passengers using the Delhi Metro will soon be able to utilise QR codes on their mobile phones to enter and depart stations. They said that as a precursor, paper tickets with QR codes were deployed across all Metro lines on Monday.
These actions, according to the authorities, are a part of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's (DMRC) long-term strategy to eliminate tokens, allowing passengers access to its stations exclusively through paper- and mobile-based QR code tickets, as well as smart cards.
"At least two entrance and exit Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates at every Metro station have been modified to scan QR codes, and the DMRC has begun using paper tickets with QR codes on all of its lines. We'll implement mobile-based QR tickets by the end of the month, which would do away with the need to physically buy tickets at counters and stations, said Anuj Dayal, principal executive director of corporate communications at DMRC on Monday.
A Metro employee who is aware with the initiative claims that a passenger may buy an e-ticket using the Delhi Metro app on their smartphone; upon payment, a QR code would be created, with numerous alternatives accessible.
Then, all a passenger needs to do to enter the Metro station is hold their smartphone in front of the QR code reader on the AFC gate. To be sure, the Delhi Metro has utilised a QR-based paper ticketing system since September 2018 on the Airport Express Line.
The new paper tickets issued on Monday, according to DMRC authorities, are non-refundable, and access from stations other than the issuing station will not be allowed. However, a refund can be given if there are any operational issues with the Metro network.
Within 60 minutes after getting their paper ticket with a QR code, passengers must enter. The ticket becomes invalid if the customer does not enter inside this window, and neither admittance nor a refund will be given, according to Dayal.
