NewsThe state government plans to establish clean street food centres in the districts of Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur in the near future. Similar centres would be established in the districts of Chengalpattu, Nagapattinam, and Coimbatore. Local governments in the selected districts will grant land for the establishment of food hubs, which will be run in accordance with food safety regulations.
The Greater Chennai Corporation has shortlisted areas for the city's culinary centres. Following basic hygiene and sanitation regulations, each hub will feature a cluster of 20 or more merchants offering food. Based on an audit, the local body will acknowledge the hubs as clean street food hubs.
Work on the Elliot's Beach food centres is anticipated to begin soon. Other areas suggested for these centres in the State include Mamallapuram in Chengalpattu district, Avadi in Tiruvallur district, and Velankanni in Nagapattinam district.
Most food sellers do not adhere to any standard operating procedure in terms of hygiene. Residents have claimed several public health hazards as a result of eating food supplied by these vendors. The government will establish similar hubs in additional districts based on the sanitary rating of the booths at the food hubs.
