News33% of all fatal accidents include pedestrians, according to Alok Kumar, Additional Director General of Police, Traffic and Road Safety. The municipal traffic police and the director of traffic and road safety are developing an annual strategy to reduce pedestrian fatalities out of concern for the rising incidence of pedestrian fatalities. In order to decrease the incidence of pedestrian fatalities, Mr. Alok Kumar has suggested long-, medium-, and short-term plans that, in his opinion, should be implemented in tandem.
According to Mr. Alok Kumar, the plan's top targets are to improve the infrastructure, build pedestrian-friendly pavements, and upgrade the city's existing walkways in order to reduce the number of pedestrian fatalities. The police can better plan if they do a thorough investigation of the backgrounds, ages, and types of accidents involving pedestrians. The action plan calls for raising awareness both in urban and rural areas. The majority of pedestrian fatalities are caused by two-wheelers. He stated that excessive vehicle speed should be reduced to reasonable speed limits.
Statistics show that there were 247 pedestrian fatalities in the city overall in 2022, up from the 161 reported in 2021. The examination of each fatality showed that the other factors contributing to the death remained the same, despite the fact that it can be determined that Covid limitations lowered the amount of pedestrian mobility, Mr. Kumar stated.
In order to enable the traffic police better plan and implement preventative measures, the research should be concentrated on the location, pattern, and nature of the accident. He noted that the causes include lack of lane discipline, speeding, and poor road engineering and infrastructure.
