A unique festival of libraries to be held on August 5-6 in Delhi, will launch a special ranking system for libraries across India

A particular rating system for libraries throughout India will be introduced at a special festival of libraries that will be hosted in the city. Aiming to promote a culture of reading, the two-day festival, which will take place on August 5 and 6, will also feature exhibitions of related crafts like calligraphy, cursive writing, and cartography in addition to launching the creation of a crowdsourced directory of all reasonably large book collections in the nation. A senior official in the Ministry of Culture said that the festival will highlight renowned libraries from around the globe to start a discussion about the modernization and digitization of libraries in India and discuss a special policy for developing libraries down to village and community levels.

54,856 public libraries exist in India. The Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation (RRRL), an arm of the Culture Ministry, supports public library systems and services in India. Currently, the RRRL foundation supports and funds close to 6,000–7,000 libraries annually around the nation. The National Project on Libraries (NML), a special project with a $400 crore budget, was also announced by the government in 2014. 35 Central libraries in States, six libraries under the Culture Ministry, and 35 district libraries are to be created as model libraries under the plan, with a focus on creating these libraries in economically depressed areas. Additionally, it hopes to connect 629 district libraries around the United States to the digital network. Literary festival directors, well-known writers, publishing firms, owners of book cafés, and translators are anticipated to attend the event in August.

There are also scheduled panel talks on technological breakthroughs including translation software, audiobooks, and podcasts as well as best practises in libraries from across the world. The "National Mission for Manuscripts," "One Nation, One Subscription," and "Indian Library Standards and Benchmarking" are a few of the existing and prospective programmes for Indian libraries and their holdings that will be discussed in parallel themed sessions.

The festival will feature an exhibition of tribal fonts and scripts, a display of cartographic archives, calligraphy styles, and cursive writing in 22 Indian vernacular languages, as well as an award ceremony honouring institutional and private libraries that have performed exemplary work at the national, state, district, and village levels. It will be accessible to both public and private libraries, as well as village and local government book collections.
