NewsAlthough "Opportunity Café" appears to be just another restaurant in a food-loving metropolis, it is unique in that it is owned by young people who would not otherwise have the opportunity to integrate into society. This non-profit café debuted last month on Dum Dum Road and is run by young adults with intellectual disabilities or who were raised in foster families.
16 young adults are in charge of Opportunity Café. Nine of them, three women and six men, are orphans or from low-income households. They suffer from diseases including Down syndrome and autism. Out of the seven, two are the offspring of sex workers and five are residents of a house managed by an organisation that provides refuge to females who have been rescued from human trafficking.
The café intends to host open mic nights, art exhibitions, and seminars in order to draw customers. There will be a special performance by the main vocalist of the well-known Bangla band Cactus on February 21. Although the café has seen some returning patrons in the brief period since it opened, Mr. Ghosh suggested drawing larger groups.
