On the eve of the 75th Republic Day, President of India Droupadi Murmu approved 277 gallantry medals. The majority of the 277 bravery medals go to 119 individuals from places impacted by left-wing extremism, 133 individuals from the Jammu and Kashmir region, and 25 individuals from other regions for their valiant deeds.

72 members of the J&K Police, 18 members of Maharashtra, 26 members of Chhattisgarh, 23 members of Jharkhand, 15 members of Odisha, 8 members of Delhi, 65 members of the CRPF, 21 members of the SSB, and the remaining members of the other States/UTs and CAPFs have received 275 of the 277 gallantry medals.

Two Police Medals for Gallantry (PMG) have been given to BSF personnel among the recipients of gallantry medals for their exceptional service to the esteemed responsibility of peacekeeping as a part of the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). The servicemen in the Moroccan Rapid Deployment Battalion (MORRDB) Camp at Butembo are part of the 15th Congo Contingent of the BSF.

The Government of India established the Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, and Vir Chakra as the first three bravery awards on January 26, 1950, following independence.  The Government of India established three more gallantry medals on January 4, 1952: Ashoka Chakra Class-I, Class-II, and Class-III. In January 1967, these prizes were renamed Ashoka Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra, in that order. The announcement of these bravery medals takes place twice a year, on Republic Day and Independence Day.
