The Vizhinjam International Seaport, which is still under development, has received ten enormous cranes in total, including two ship-to-shore and eight-yard cranes that are necessary for port operations. On Tuesday, the last ship that arrived at the port with six-yard cranes will sail back to China to deliver the next shipment. By December 15, a second ship with two ship-to-shore and three yard cranes is anticipated to arrive at the port.
Eight ship-to-shore quay cranes and twenty-four 24-yard cantilever rail-mounted gantry cranes were ordered by the port authorities here from M/s ZPMC (Zhenhua Port Machinery firm), a Shanghai, China-based firm.
Concurrently, berth and breakwater building are being carried out. For the berthing of boats in Phase 1 of the project, a berth extending 800 metres must be prepared. While construction on a 2,500-meter breakwater has already been finished, an equivalent length of 2,960 metres of breakwater is still needed to provide the tranquilly conditions for berthing boats.
