Operation Jaladhara has given a new lease of life to several streams in the Thiruvananthapuram

The Thiruvananthapuram district administration's Operation Jaladhara has given fresh life to various streams in the capital city. The initiative, which aims to prevent waterlogging in the city, has revitalised three major canals and begun cleaning up ten others. The effort to clear the silt and trash that have collected in the waterbodies is being done in conjunction to the Minor Irrigation Department's pre-monsoon clean-up push.

As part of the continuing project, sections of the Kannukalichal canal from Kariyam bridge to Punchakkari bridge, and from Punchakkari bridge to Madhupalam bridge, as well as portions of the Pattom canal in Muttada and Kinavoor wards inside the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation boundaries, have been cleaned. The district government had approved a budget of Rs. 6.96 lakh.

An extra 26 lakh has been set aside for cleaning the other 10 canals designated as part of the project. These include segments of the Karumbali canal, Kariyil canal, Panachikkapalam-Kumarichantha and Moonnattumukku canals, the Venchavodu portion of the Thettiyar canal, and the Vetturoad and Kazhakuttam canals.

Additionaly, in preparation for the monsoon, the Minor Irrigation department has finished cleaning up the Kalady portion of the Nedumangad, Pattom, Kunnukuzhy, Kariyil, Thottumukku Jaladhar, Elavattom, and Karipur Kakka canals.
