NewsThe door-to-door distribution of birth and death certificates from hospitals within the Udupi City Municipal Council boundaries was officially initiated by Udupi-in-charge Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar on Saturday at the district office complex in Rajatadri in Manipal. The project was started by Deputy Commissioner M. Kurma Rao in collaboration with the Postal Department. The Udupi CMC and India Post had signed a memorandum of understanding in which India Post agreed to send special people to collect the certificates from the CMC.
The program is noteworthy since the Udupi area has been identified as a major healthcare centre, with facilities in Manipal and Udupi. People from all around the state and beyond come to the district's hospitals for treatment. While they would apply for the certificates immediately after the death/birth, the CMC may not be able to provide them right away. In such cases, the candidates must go to Udupi from afar at a later date, which is inconvenient for them.
Recognising the challenge, Mr. Rao urged the CMC to collaborate with India Post to deliver the certificates to the door once they were ready. Once the applications and accompanying documentation are submitted to the CMC, people who want certificates delivered to their door must pay a $80 charge. According to an official announcement, certificates would be given to the specified addresses across India.
According to the DC, thousands of people visit the Udupi area for medical care, jobs, and other reasons. They were unable to secure birth/death certificates for a variety of reasons, therefore the project was devised. Over 100 birth and death certificates were given to applicants via India Post in the last 10 days of its informal debut, he added. Mr. Rao went on to say that this plan was mandated for all urban local bodies in the district.
