Central Square will soon house a 27-storey building; a massive parking space with eight levels has been readied

A 27-story structure will soon be constructed in the Central Square, which has become an icon of the city and is visited by thousands of people every day. According to representatives of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), a sizable parking area for the eight-story building is ready as a first phase. According to authorities, the parking lot is a sizable structure with space for up to 1,900 cars, including 1,500 two-wheelers and 400 four-wheelers.

Following discussions with various stakeholders, the building's design was also completed. In recent years, there have been several alterations to the design. CMRL originally had a 33-story skyscraper in mind, however it was later reduced to 31 stories. The idea of building two towers—one with 17 stories and the other with seven—was then put forth.

The present design calls for a single, 27-story skyscraper.  A multi-modal hub that allows commuters to easily interchange between many means of transportation, including Metro Rail, suburban and long-distance trains, and buses, the Central Square is anticipated to cost $400 crore. The square was officially opened in March 2022 with amenities including landscaping, a pedestrian plaza, escalator-equipped subways, and updated bus bays.
