India has unveiled its first flying taxi prototype, 'Shunya,' at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in New Delhi. Developed by Bengaluru-based Sarla Aviation, 'Shunya' is designed for short urban trips, accommodating up to six passengers with a maximum payload of 680 kg. It can reach speeds of up to 250 km/h, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce pollution.
To advance this initiative, Sona SPEED, a precision manufacturing firm known for its contributions to ISRO's space missions, has partnered with Sarla Aviation. The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaboratively design and manufacture key components for the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Sona SPEED will utilize its state-of-the-art facilities in Karnataka to produce critical components such as motors and landing gear.
Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, HD Kumaraswamy, visited the Sarla Aviation booth at the expo, expressing strong interest in the flying taxi prototype. The unveiling is being hailed as a historic step toward sustainable and futuristic urban transportation in India. Sarla Aviation plans to launch the electric flying taxis in Bengaluru by 2028, with intentions to expand to other major cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, and Pune. Additionally, the company aims to introduce a free air ambulance service to enhance rapid medical responses in urban environments.
This collaboration between Sona SPEED and Sarla Aviation represents a significant milestone in India's journey toward revolutionizing urban mobility, positioning the country as a leader in the development of next-generation transportation solutions.
