A 30-hectare (74-acre) protected area called Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is situated in the Madurantakam taluk of the Chengalpattu District in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
During the migratory season, almost 40,000 birds from all over the world—including 26 rare species—visit the refuge annually.Migratory birds including pintail, garganey, grey wagtail, blue-winged teal, common sandpiper, and others may be seen at Vedanthangal. Since 2022, it has been recognised as a protected Ramsar site.
The nation's first water bird sanctuary is called Vedanthangal.In Tamil, Vedanthangal translates to "hamlet of the hunter."
