Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has bagged the Social Justice departments award for disabled-friendly city this year

NewsThe award is given in appreciation of the civic organization's efforts on behalf of people with disabilities. Every year, it allocates around 5% of the Plan fund to the empowerment of people with disabilities.
A total of ₹6.68 crore was spent on raising the living standards and uplifting the disabled in the 2023–24 fiscal year.
The main office and zonal offices of the city corporation are designed to be accessible to people with disabilities. Additionally, the parks within the Corporation's boundaries are accessible to those with disabilities. Scholarships are awarded to students who are permanent residents and have a physical disability of 40% or more. In 2023–2024, 304 students received scholarships out of ₹25 lakh that had been set aside. 7,390 people with physical and mental disabilities are receiving pensions. Palliative care services for people with disabilities are also guaranteed by the civic authority.
The Corporation hosts one-day art and sports competitions where students with disabilities can participate and their physical and mental leisure is supported.
For the hearing handicapped, cochlear implantation and maintenance are handled directly by the city corporation. For this purpose, ₹19 lakh was used. An annual sum of ₹50,000 is allocated for the periodic maintenance of equipment in the case of a child who has undergone cochlear implantation surgery.
Additionally, wheelchairs, electric wheelchairs, hearing aids, and side-wheeled scooters were given out. A total of 86.40 lakh in assistive devices were bought and given out in the 2023–24 year.
In schools, accessible restrooms were constructed. Additionally, chairs and tables that are accessible to those with disabilities are being provided in classrooms.
A printing lab, air-conditioned classrooms, a children's park, and a lab with contemporary audiology equipment were also installed at Government VHSS for the Deaf, Jagathy.
Additionally, the Corporation offers startup capital for tiny shops. At 50% subsidy, an individual receives ₹60,000.
The five "Take-a-break" centers within the Corporation bounds have accessible restrooms, cafeterias, and rest areas.
