Therottam of Arulmigu Kaliyuha Varadharaja Perumal Temple in Kallankurichi celebrated on April 14-15
14 Apr 2023
EventThe Arulmigu Kaliyuha Varadharaja Perumal Temple, which is situated in Kallankurichi hamlet in the Ariyalur district, annually organises a magnificent "Therottam" (vehicle festival) throughout the months of March and April. 250 years ago, "Padaiyaachi," an ordinary villager who discovered a miracle 12-foot-tall pillar, built the temple. The principal deity of the temple is now the pillar. The principal god of this temple, Lord Hanuman, is also represented by an idol in addition to the main deity. The temple does not hold celebrations like Vaikuntha Ekadasi and Sorga Vaasal Thirappu because it lacks a fully carved idol of Lord Vishnu. This sets this temple apart from other Vaishnavite temples in the region where grandiose celebrations of these events take place.
The Dasavadhara Mandapam, a pillared hall inside the temple, is well-known for its 10 finely sculpted Lord Vishnu incarnations. The abhishegam (holy bath), which is given to the "Utsava Moorthy" on the festival day, is made from nine distinct ingredients: water, ghee, sandalwood paste, honey, turmeric, milk, curd, honey, and panchamirtham (an amalgam of fruit and jaggery). (procession deity). The giant chariot is decked in colourful silk robes and fragrant flowers, and the Utsava Moorthy is put on top of it while it is drawn in a parade by thousands of followers who worship the deity in chant and singing.
