Tarnetar, which is around 75 km from Rajkot, is well-known for its yearly Tarnetar Fair. The swayamvar, an occasion where a lady chooses her husband from among the numerous men who approach her to beg for her hand in marriage, is associated with Draupadi from the epic Mahabharata and is said to be the origin of the fair. The state's ethnic traditional dance, music, and artistic endeavours are honoured during the fair.
'Raas' is one of the most popular dance genres, in which up to 200 ladies circle each other and do identical movements. The renowned dance known as rahado is performed by the Zalawad rabari ladies. In addition to the dancing, there are a number of bhajan mandlis, or devotional music ensembles, singing. During the fair, many stalls are set up where guests may purchase ethnic jewellery, costumes and other items.
