The first day of the Tamil month of Chithirai is the day that Tamil Nadu celebrates Puthandunew year. April is Tamil Puthandu month, when it is celebrated. Puthandu stands out because, according to the Gregorian calendar, it almost always falls on the same day each year. According to Hindu mythology, the universe was supposedly founded on the day of Tamil New Year by Lord Brahma. Puthandu Tamilians all around the country celebrate Puthandu, also known as Varsha Pirappu, with a great degree of splendour and ceremony. People adorn their homes, perform special poojas, and make Pongal in order to celebrate the new year with their loved ones. With elaborate poojas and homams, the Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareshwarar Temple in Madurai honours the occasion.
The state's residents commemorate this occasion by decorating the front door of their homes with colourful rice flour decorations called kolams. Foods prepared by families include Puthandu-specific specialties like Pongal and mango pachadi. Additionally, some people sing devotional songs and do special poojas to bring prosperity and joy to their homes. The mouthwatering foods of Puthandu spread also include vadai sambhar sadam rice payasam appalam papad vegetable curry fresh mango pickle and curd in addition to mango pachadi and Pongal Puthandu Nalvalthukal, which translates to "Happy New Year" in English, is the state's greeting to one another.
