Fort St. George, also known as White Town in the past, is a fort located in Chennai, an Indian coastal metropolis. It was the first English (then British) stronghold built in India, having been founded in 1639. In what had previously been an empty area, the fort's construction gave rise to other villages and trade. The Tamil Nadu legislative assembly and other government buildings are presently housed in the fort.
