St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica and National Shrine of Saint Thomas, also known as San Thome Church, is a minor basilica of the Catholic Church located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu's Santhome area. Originally erected by the Portuguese atop what was thought to be Thomas the Apostle's grave, the current edifice was completed in 1523 AD.As was popular with British architects in the late 19th century, it underwent renovations in the Madras province in 1896 using neo-Gothic designs.
With a completely white front and a rich brown interior ceiling, Santhome Church is a grand structure. A magnificent neo-Gothic church with rows of oak benches, naturally illuminated interiors, and stunning windows with colourful panes enchants every visitor.
The nave, the church's striking principal space, is 112 feet by 33 feet and is adorned with magnificent chandeliers. Behind the main altar, stained glass windows depict the life of St. Thomas and the other apostles of Jesus Christ.
