Sanjay Gandhi National Park is 87 km2 protected area in Mumbai, Maharashtra and was founded in 1969 and has its main office in Borivali. The park has the 2400-year-old Kanheri caves, which were carved by monks from the basaltic rocks. Over two million visitors annually are drawn to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park by its abundant flora and fauna.
The majority of Mumbai's northern suburbs are covered by the park. Mumbai includes the park and its environs, with the exception of Thane city. The only protected woodland inside a city limits is this one. The park's Vihar Lake and Tulsi Lake help the city satisfy some of its water needs. Since it filters out a large portion of the city's air pollution, the park is referred to as the "lungs" of the metropolis.
