Roads in Chennai to get bus priority lanes for better management of traffic and faster transportation

Bus priority lanes are planned for several Chennai roads, notably the one that runs from Chennai Central to Tambaram, to improve traffic management and expedite travel.

Senior State government officials convened a meeting on Thursday to discuss the viability of introducing bus priority lanes. Bus priority measures are anticipated for sections of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) bus route and highways administered by the department.

To implement bus priority lanes in the Chennai Metropolitan Area, officials have begun studying some routes, including Chennai Central-Tambaram and Koyambedu-Guindy. Bus priority lanes will be installed on many of the 471 bus route routes in the GCC, including those that the Highways Department recently turned over to the civic organisation, according to authorities.

Preventing buses from obstructing roadways and impeding traffic flow is a straightforward goal that the GCC and traffic police have already begun addressing by erecting more boxes next to bus bays.
